Expertise

Abhijeet graduated from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, USA, with a Ph.D. in Marine Natural Products in 2008. He has worked for prominent companies like Piramal Enterprises Limited and SABIC during his 13 years in the industry. Since 2017, he has been associated with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Ahmedabad, where he is currently working as an Associate Professor and Head, The Department of Natural Products. He holds 3 patents and published more than 35 papers in the field of natural products and analytical research.
In Natural Products-based drug discovery programs, he has optimized LC-HRMS dereplication methods, downstream processes for large-scale isolation of Natural Products, and created a methodology for fingerprinting of extracts by LC-UV-MS. He is most interested in discovering novel scaffolds from marine and terrestrial bacteria, fungi, and plants. A team led by Dr. Abhijeet is looking into lichens of Gujarat for the presence of bioactive molecules. In an effort to discover the treatment for diabetes, his team is finding a natural product that can bind GLP-1 receptor and enhance insulin secretion.
