The next pandemic is feared to be posed by drug-resistant superbugs. Due to the injudicious use of antibiotics, intrinsic resistance to drugs, and factors we do not understand yet, pathogenic organisms develop antimicrobial resistance (AMR). WHO lists AMR as one of the Ten threats to global health, and projections estimate 10 million deaths every year due to AMR by 2050.
Our group at NIPER-A is taking a multidisciplinary approach to tackle AMR in Candida spp., a group of oppurtunistic fungal pathogens which cause superficial, invasive and life-threatening systemic infections. Other thrust areas of our lab are Nucleo-cytoplasmic transport and Quality control of cellular membranes.
